Calls: On the Dock

Putting the boat in the water and taking it out — without dragging riggers or hitting the pylon.

Adapted from The Ultimate USC Coxswain Guide by Sophia Steck.

Into the water

  • Tell them which dock they’re going to, and which side.
    • Stand at the back of the boat, watch where they’re headed and make sure riggers don’t hit anything.
  • Weigh nuff
    • In the eights, call it when the bow is two dock cubes from the end. Make sure the stern won’t hit the pylon — they can walk it between the pylon and the dock edge.
  • Up and over heads… ready… up!
    • Use this moment to walk to the stern so you can watch the skeg as they roll.
  • Toes to edge
  • Roll it in… ready… roll!
    • They support the boat the whole way down — no dropping, no splashing. If they drop it, have them take it out and try again.
    • Watch the skeg and push the stern away from the dock when needed.
  • <Side> get oars, <other side> get oarlocks
    • Feel free to tell them to pick up the pace here.
  • Oars out
  • One foot in… and… down
    • Let everyone get in, then climb in after.
  • Count down from bow when ready
    • They tell you when they’re strapped in. If boats are backed up waiting to launch, skip it and let them tie in on the water.
  • Lean away and walk it down
    • Lean away from the dock so the riggers don’t drag. Remind them to pull oars in for the pylon — they forget.

Out of the water

  • Lean away and catch the dock
    • Tell them as you approach so you don’t drag riggers and get a cleaner landing.
  • Weigh nuff
    • When you’re happy with the placement, stop and climb out.
  • One foot out… up and out
  • <Side> get oars, <other side> get oarlocks
  • Hands on
  • Up and over heads… ready… up!
    • Next to the pylon? Remind them to stay close to the edge, and watch the stern so it doesn’t smack the pylon.
  • Down to shoulders… ready… down!
    • The perfect moment for Trojan spirit: have them shout SC! as the boat comes down. Really fun at races.
  • Walk it forward

  • Weigh nuff
  • Up and over heads… ready… up!
  • Toes to edge(脚尖站到码头边)
  • Roll it in… ready… roll!(翻船放入水中)
  • <一侧> get oars, <另一侧> get oarlocks(一侧拿桨,另一侧开桨栓)
  • Oars out(桨伸出)
  • One foot in… and… down(一只脚踩进船……
  • Count down from bow when ready(从船头开始报数)
  • Lean away and walk it down(身体远离码头,沿码头推船)

  • Lean away and catch the dock(远离码头一侧倾,靠上码头)
  • Weigh nuff
  • One foot out… up and out(一只脚踩上码头……起身)
  • <一侧> get oars, <另一侧> get oarlocks
  • Hands on
  • Up and over heads… ready… up!
  • Down to shoulders… ready… down!
  • Walk it forward
