Visualization and Start Sequences

Calling a race on land — the 2k start sequence step by step, then the full 2k and 5k.

Adapted from The Ultimate USC Coxswain Guide by Sophia Steck.

Coach will make you visualize — usually a start sequence first, then a 2k in spring, then a 5k in your second year. There are no stakes: you’re on land, you can rewind and try again. Use your most confident voice, and if all else fails, fake it ‘til you make it.

2k start sequence

Coach wants more than counting strokes — prepare a few things to say in the high and lengthen strokes (practise them to your wall if you need to).

The first five strokes

  • Legs, half, three-quarters, three-quarters, full
    • Quick strokes focused on timing more than pressure — remind the crew. Short pulses accelerate the boat faster than long, heavy strokes.
    • Some crews prefer Legs, press, squeeze, lengthen, complete instead. Ask them, or experiment.

5, 10 or 20 high

  • 5 high! / 10 high! / 20 high!
    • High, open-rate strokes. The crew is excited — focus calls on timing and applying pressure together.
    • 5 high: no time for real calls — count them (That's 1… 2…), and right after the fifth call Leeengthen as they come up to the catch. Stretching the word helps them do it together.
    • 10 or 20 high: a few real calls — get to the point. Announce the lengthen, count down the last 3 (for a 10) or last 5 (for a 20), then Leeengthen on the way to the catch.
  • We're going to lengthen out in 3… in 2… in 1… now leeengthen out

10 to lengthen out (usually)

  • The crew settles into base rate. If they won’t bring the rate down enough, make another lengthen call — and tell them their rate.
  • Get them relaxed with heads in the boat. Stay relaxed but sharp, and tell them where the other boats are to keep the fire going.

Make it feel real. Invent a competitor (We're half a boat up on UCSB), predict their rate (Cruising at a rate 30), and use names — rowers love being called on. Above all, think about who’s in your boat and what they usually need to hear.

2k

Seven minutes of calling into the ether — prepare, and lean on your race plan (see Race Plans and Execution). Its landmark calls at the 500, 1000 and 1500 give you 10s and 20s to fall back on. Set a phone timer and take the 500 at 1:45, the 1000 at 3:30, and so on.

For everything in between, picture your practice pieces: who’s making what mistake? Who’s making a big puddle? Is the crew tense — time for an unplanned 5 to relax? Act out passing a whole boat, seat by seat:

  • I've got their 5 seat! Who's gonna give me their 3 seat in 5 strokes?
  • <Name>, you just got me their 2 seat. Now use those legs to drive through this boat. There ya go! BOWBALL!

Bonus points if it’s a crew you’re actually racing next.

5k

The coxswain’s race — the line you take makes or breaks it. Imagine the course: power-up calls on the turns, announcing the bridges. It’s hard to picture 15–20 minutes of landmarks, so mute a coxswain video and follow it for the course, alongside your race plan and what you know about your crew.

  • Legs, half, three-quarters, three-quarters, full(腿、半桨、四分之三、四分之三、全桨)

  • 5 high! / 10 high! / 20 high!
  • We're going to lengthen out in 3… in 2… in 1… now leeengthen out

(We're half a boat up on UCSB),预测桨频(Cruising at a rate 30),点名——桨手很喜欢被点名。

  • I've got their 5 seat! Who's gonna give me their 3 seat in 5 strokes?
  • <名字>, you just got me their 2 seat. Now use those legs to drive through this boat. There ya go! BOWBALL!
