We’re lucky to have flat water — but not always: think hail storms, strong winds, and the wake that flooded the boat. Your job is to react quickly and calmly, adjust the strokes and steer accordingly.
Head wind
To be added.
Tail wind
A tail wind lets the boat fly (especially lightweights), but it takes finesse.
- Blades catch the wind, so square up a little earlier — let the blades act like sails for “free length” at the catch.
- They still need to control bodies and slides so they don’t fly with the blades.
- It’s easy to get stuck at the finish — call for
Quick, clean finishesandHands away.
Cross wind
A cross wind mainly affects two things: your set and your point.
Small wakes / chop
Common in a port full of tugboats. Only you can see the wakes coming, so warn the crew and tell them how to handle it:
There's a wake coming from the port side in about five strokes.Big turns on the port side— the side the wake hits makes bigger turns at the finish, keeping blades clear and the boat set.- Tell them when they’re through.
In general chop, both sides make bigger turns for a longer stretch — same idea.
Large wakes
A massive white-capped wake coming at you is terrifying — think fast. Turn the boat parallel to the wake and lean away from it. This raises the height the wave has to reach before it gets in.
Prop wash
The scariest one: the swirling water behind a tugboat, usually when it’s perpendicular to the channel pushing a cargo ship into place.
- Best option: avoid it —
Weigh nuffand turn around (especially in the red-buoy channel). - If Coach has you row through (on the way to the green bridge), stay as far from the tug as you can while leaving room to get pushed toward shore — because you will.
- Drop every other call and focus on where you’re headed. Have one side power up to counter the push.
- Always warn them first:
Prop wash coming up.

(Head wind)
顺风(Tail wind)
Quick, clean finishes、Hands away。
侧风(Cross wind)
There's a wake coming from the port side in about five strokes.(左舷大约五桨后有浪)Big turns on the port side——浪打过来的一侧在结束时把桨柄转得更大,避免桨叶被浪卡住,也补偿浪把船压向一侧。
(Prop wash)
Weigh nuff,
Prop wash coming up.
