Nobody teaches steering, yet everyone expects you to be good at it — for good reason. It can make or break a race, and rowers judge a coxswain by it.

Small adjustments

The biggest problem is oversteering — that signature zig-zag. Keep the rudder centred by default (most eights have tape marks; if not, add them). When you drift off course, move the balls only an inch or so, then return to centre.

  • Vespoli — the rudder only moves an inch; very sensitive, be extra soft.
  • Resolute — the rudder moves a lot and the boat responds less; you’ll move more, but still keep it minimal.
  • Fours are shorter and far more sensitive than eights — stay vigilant.

Slam the rudder to one side and you’ll steer aggressively and drop the boat to one side. The boat takes a few strokes to respond, so keep your head up and adjust early.

Keep a light grip

In the eight, slip the strings between your index and middle fingers and rest your pinkies on the gunwale. To adjust, curl the two fingers slightly on the steering side, using the pinkies to brace and limit the movement. Letting go for long stretches stops accidental steering and shows you who is being outpulled. In the fours, don’t white-knuckle the lever.

Choose a point

For a straight course (a 2k), pick something far away on your line — a bridge pole, a crane, a steam plume — and align the bow on it. In an eight the rowers block your view, so use a point on stroke’s right shoulder; in a four you can line up on the bowball. Steering is then mostly bringing yourself back onto that point.

Choose a line

When you need to curve (a 5k, or going down the channel), plan the whole path: a series of points, or a set distance from shore. Keep your head up for obstacles and think ahead — that’s what makes clean, well set-up turns.

The 30-second rule

Every 30 seconds or so, look ahead and check where you’re going. If you’re off your point or line, make one small adjustment. You’ll spot the women’s team, a tugboat or a tumbleweed long before it arrives — and if you move to starboard before Coach mentions it, he’ll be thrilled. In an eight, lean slightly to see around the rowers. This matters most at regattas and in places like Newport or Marina del Rey, with small boats and buoys everywhere.

Use your rowers

Uneven pressure, bad timing or hammered catches make the boat wiggle — call it out:

  • Starboards, you're being outpulled! Are you gonna let that happen?!

To change direction quickly (an obstacle, or a big drift off your point), one side powering up beats the rudder:

  • Ports, give me two strong strokes.
  • Ports, power up! We've gotta get out of the way of the women.

When avoiding something, tell them why so the strokes carry some urgency.

When it gets busy

When steering is critical (a boat on either side), it’s okay to drop technique and motivational calls and just hold your point or line. Talk to — or yell at — other coxswains if they’re in your way. Technique comes back when there’s space. Steering becomes second nature with boat time; stay patient.

  • Starboards, you're being outpulled! Are you gonna let that happen?!

  • Ports, give me two strong strokes.
  • Ports, power up! We've gotta get out of the way of the women.
